Why Did You Want to
Become a Dentist?
Dr. Coontz knew he wanted to work in the healthcare field from a very early age. His grandfather was a surgeon, so he decided to follow in his footsteps. Unfortunately, getting into medical school was very difficult during the Vietnam War, so Dr. Coontz ended up enrolling in dental school instead. Thankfully, he loved it, and after earning his degree and specializing in periodontics, he decided to focus on sleep and TMJ care so he could do more to provide what his patients needed.
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
Dr. Coontz completed his general dental training at the Loyola University School of Dentistry in Chicago, and he went on to earn a Master of Science in Oral Biology as well as his Certificate in Periodontics shortly afterward.
Since then, over the decades, he has taken countless hours of advanced training for dental sleep medicine and TMJ therapy, including at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. To stay at the forefront of these disciplines, he maintains memberships in several professional organizations, including the:
- American Sleep and Breathing Academy (Diplomate status)
- American Academy of Sleep Medicine
- Academy of Associate Sleep Professionals
- American Academy of Physiologic Medicine and Dentistry
- American Academy of Periodontology
Outside the Dental Office,
What Do You Like to Do?
Dr. Coontz likes to say that his marriage started with an international love story. While working at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, he met his future wife, Arminda, who is originally from the Philippines. They were eventually married in Amman, Jordan, and 24 years later, they are still together and the proud parents of two children. He still loves to travel and experience different cultures, always planning his next trip in his head.
